Tragic End: The Vivienne's Battle with Ketamine Addiction

The world of drag is mourning the loss of a dazzling star. James Lee Williams, known to the world as The Vivienne, passed away at only 32 on January 5, 2025. The beloved winner of the first season of *RuPaul’s Drag Race UK* was found unresponsive in their Chorlton-by-Backford home, with the tragic cause of death revealed to be cardiac arrest, triggered by ketamine use.

James's death has spotlighted a serious issue often overshadowed in discussions. With ketamine becoming increasingly prevalent in the UK, particularly among the younger generation, James's family is determined to prevent other young lives from being lost. Manager Simon Jones shared their collective hope to raise awareness about the grave risks associated with ketamine use.

During their *Drag Race UK* appearance in 2019, James openly discussed a grueling four-year battle with ketamine addiction. They bravely shared how the pressures entailed by drag performances partially fueled this struggle, illuminating the often-ignored mental health challenges faced by those in the entertainment industry.

The family, deeply devastated, is channelling their grief into an inspiring mission. Partnering with the UK charity Adferiad, they announced the launch of *Only Human*, a campaign focused on reducing stigma and supporting those on the path to recovery from addiction. Adferiad spokesperson, Donna Chaves, stressed the often under-discussed health risks of ketamine and the campaign's dedication to education and support.

An inquest into James's untimely death was opened on February 12, 2025, and is set to resume on June 30. Despite the heartbreak, James’s sister, Chanel Williams, emphasized their commitment to using this tragedy as a catalyst for change and awareness.

The drag community is feeling this loss profoundly. RuPaul, Shea Couleé, and others have paid tribute to James’s exceptional talent and influence, from their unforgettable Donald Trump impersonation on *Drag Race* to their appearances in projects like *Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie*.

The legacy that James leaves behind goes beyond their remarkable performances. Through the family's advocacy and the new campaign, there’s hope that James's story will save others from the same fate, turning personal tragedy into a powerful mission.
